Eyeballs simply do not rot. You don’t believe me? So you never watched any zombie movie, I see. Well, I’m not into horror movies myself. Actually there is only ONE zombie movie I like and that’s “Return of the Living Dead”. It was the winner in the 1985’s ‘War of the Zombie Flicks’ (ROTLD, Thriller, Ghoulies, Supernaturals, ReAnimator, Lifeforce, and Day of the Dead beeing the competitors) and finally established humor as a fundamental part of the genre. I don’t mean only ‘splatstick’ but a general tongue-in-cheek, self-ironical tone like “Hey, somebody get some light over here, Trash is taking off her clothes again.” or the line which gives this article its name. It gets a whole new meaning when you know that it’s spoken by a zombie, doesn’t it?
Dan O’Bannon mixed all the ingredients the right way and directed a well paced movie, which spawned four sequels and counting. His zombies can run, are intelligent and witty and brain gourmets, whereas Romero’s ghouls go for the whole meal. They simply can not be killed, solving a huge inconsistency in common Zombilogy. But no further spoilers here, since August last year you can buy a DVD, go look for yourself.
But you can just check out some links: The trailer, dozens of screenshots, a very informative fansite, a review at
BadMovies, the website of Linnea
Quigley and of Beverly Randolph.
And my brother’s webcomic has a zombified story arc, too.
