Duct Tape. Better'n sliced bread.

Surely you know Duct Tape. Everyone does. It’s all around the world, holding together things that in a sense do not want to stay together. Like – concrete example – square carbon dioxide filters in round receptacles, thus saving the Apollo 13. That rocket with Tom Hanks, Gary Sinise and Kevin Bacon on board.
It was invented either in the twenties by 3M or in the fourties by Johnson & Johnson but who cares? Because it was waterproof it was baptized “Duck Tape” and subsequently won World War II for the Allies. Glad they’ve chosen a duck as godfather – though I can think of many water resistant animals – because ‘Anchovi Tape’ wouldn’t sell, I’m sure. Not only did it make ammunition cases water resistant, but soon it was used to quickly and durable repair guns, planes, jeeps and: submarines.

When Duck Tape came home from War it was awaited by thankful handymen’s tool kits, especially endorsed by plumbers. So it got its new name: Duct Tape, which sounds more serious and grown up.

Jim Berg and Tim Nyberg – aka The Duct Tape Guys – actually make a living of writing about Duct Tape. Their books have titles like: The Jumbo Duct Tape Book, The Original Duct Tape Halloween Book or Duct Shui.

And they are not the only ones to praise the adhesive tape. There is Ductigami: The Art of the Tape and Got Tape? – 30 Easy Duct Tape Projects for the Whole Family – and a funny one: You Just Don’t Duct Tape a Baby – True Tales and Sensible Suggestions from a Veteran Pediatrician.

Many things are made of Duct Tape as a contest hosted by its company demonstrates on a yearly basis. I found two very interesting DIY projects: A two-person bike and a simplistic painting robot, even I could make it. To stick someone on the wall with the tape is a less creative use as dozens of videos at YouTube testify.
Speaking of creativity – yes, there is a poem about duct tape and a song.
If you want to show your affection to this handy invention, just wear a ‘Carpe Ductem’ T-Shirt to show the world or a “Man’s Best Friend’- boxer short to show your lover or your urologist. Or simply use this wallet, which is not only made of – you know by now – but looks nice too. Apropos looking nice: Did you know that Duct Tape is more effective than cryotherapy in the treatment of warts?
So, if you are still not satisfied take a look into the ‘Duct Tape Wiki’, learn and leave me alone, gotta fix my laptop somehow. Who needs sliced bread anyway?
