When someone told me, that there are plans for a new CG-based Womble movie, I thought: ‘Now that’s exclusive information, I gotta post that!’ And I planned a feature page with all the Womble material I could find. But – thinking about it – the Wombels stirred no emotion in me. I didn’t like them when they were en vogue in the middle of the bad-taste-decade, and I do not hate them now. No tears of nostalgia run down my cheeks and no euphoria of hatred warms my heart. Some things look better from the distance, it’s true, but others never change…
Can you imagine Mike Batt had his first #1 hit with ‘The Wombling Song”? And that “Remember You’re a Womble’, ‘Wombling Merry Christmas’, ‘Super Womble’ and ‘Let’s Womble to the Party’ made it in the charts? Can you imagine that it is Mike Batt in the Orinocco costume? And did you know the Wobmles started their career as ragged teddies, not as the bear-rat-mutants from the TV-Show? Some links:
Gill Ceris is 37 years and loves the Wombles. Nice Site! Especially the memorabilia.
Matthew Clutton is 11 years and made a 34sec stop motion movie about the Wombels. Slapstick galore!
The Wombels got an Wiki entry – yes – and a very well-founded review at the Toonhound, a very intersting site made by Frazer Diamond. Recommended.
And if want to buy any Womble merchandise I recommend ‘The Wombles Guide to Life’
So, but now let’s change the subject…
