Pat Morita died on Thanksgiving. He started his career as a standup comedian, known as the “Hip Nip” and got famous as the wise teacher in the “Karate Kid” franchise. Other noteworthy appearances: “Even Cowgirls Get the Blues”, “Mulan (voice, of course) and – unforgettable – “MASH”. When he was two years old he developed spinal tuberculosis and spend about nine years in a full body cast. In 1944 a surgeon glued five vertebraes together and – aged eleven – he could walk right into an American “internment” camp, just because his parents were born in Japan.
Speaking perfect English he had to stutter in a yoda-ish way in most of his appearances, because Zen and Capitalism just don’t fit. Jaamataashita Noriyuki!
